Alison Hammond admits mum ‘would be proud’ about role away from This Morning

Alison Hammond says Mum would be proud of her Panto role

This Morning’s Alison Hammond has shared the sentimental reason that her current run in panto means so much to her. The star is currently appearing in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre playing the spirit of the bean.

On Thursday’s This Morning, she gave colleagues Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle a glimpse into her dressing room via video link. Dressed in full costume as she prepared for the show, she opened up about her memories of the theatre and why her mum would be thrilled that she was appearing there.

“This is the first place that my mum brought me as a child,” she revealed. “We came to see West Side Story.

“I can remember coming to see South Pacific and the woman was singing ‘I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair’ and I was moaning to my mum saying, ‘I just wanna leave’. Get me out of here. I don’t want to stay in this theatre!”

“So it’s one of those places where it means so much to me and my family. We used to love coming to the theatre and my mum used to really save up all her pennies to come here so it’s just a wonderful place,” she reminisced.

“And I do feel like I’m performing – even though my mum’s not here – I feel like I’m performing to her every single night. I really do. Cos she would have always wanted me to come and stay here and perform on that stage,” she confessed.

This admission led Craig Doyle to gush: “She’d be so proud of you.”

Although this is her first time performing in the Birmingham Hippodrome which is the UK’s biggest regional panto, it is not her panto debut contrary to some reports.

After her casting was announced she spoke to ITV News’ Sameena Ali-Khan and revealed that she is quite the veteran.

“It’s not my debut, see that’s where it’s gone wrong! Don’t ever listen to the press, you know what they’re like!”

“But basically, I’ve done nine pantos, in my time, and then I took a break of about six, seven years,” she said.

“And I said to myself, the only time I’m ever gonna go back to panto, is if the [Birmingham] Hippodrome asked me to come! I’m so happy. It’s such a big year, Jack and the Beanstalk. I’m the spirit of the bean,” she enthused.

This marks the end of a very busy year for Alison who has seen her This Morning presenting duties increase following the departure of both Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

She also took over as one of the hosts on Great British Bake Off.

This Morning is on ITV at 10am every weekday.
